We Will Fight Back
Poet: Jade Terrris

The earth is a living breathing
Creature
With flesh
patches of dry deserts, in need of moisture

Cycles of e-motion coursing thru
Thundering anger that splinters trees
That burns
And leaves ashes to settle in its place
Drops of sadness sliding down the hills of a face
Freckled with a thousand lights

So when you poison her blood
With mounds of plastic waste
When you destroy her heart
You are destroying our hearts too

Without the earth’s heart
There is no gentle whisper of waves
No cool escape from the heat of the world
No soothing from the pain

So she will fight back
She will send hurricanes of her fury
And waves to wash away her hurt
pouring her sadness out
in a flooding torrent of tears
She will fight back
And so will we

When you murder sapling’s parents for your own gain
When you cut down forests of oxygen
When you build layer upon layer
Of stifling cement
On top of her flesh

You are suffocating the earth
Along with yourselves

She will respond

She will make the sky burn with her pain
And we will lose our lungs

When you destroy the home of fellow animals
And leave them with no food or shelter
Don’t blame them when they come to live
in your backyard and eat your garbage

They will not go unseen
Their voices will not go unheard
And neither will ours

When you leave mounds of waste
Waiting for her creatures to find
And eat
When you let the innocent
Consume our trash
Not caring that it will burn
In their stomachs

Do not think she will not notice

She will make the sky roar with
Fiery hungry flames
Trying to swallow the pain
But there will be

Too much

Too much for her to carry

Trying to dissolve
Our garbage
Our pain

We will be left with only
The ashes to feast upon

Yet we keep going
Keep building
Keep ‘advancing’
Keep destroying

Our future

You have started a war
You are destined to lose
In the process of winning
You are losing

Our future

So we will fight back
We will be seen and heard

You’ve strayed so far from her
So far from yourself
